What My Dog Taught Me About Prayer

We have a 2-year-old runt, Shiba Inu female named Nugget. These dogs were originally bred to flush out birds and hold down boar. So you could say their personality is unique. She has no real bark, and when she really tries she coughs like she’s been smoking a pack a day. But one thing that is admirable about this dog is that she is absolutely tenacious when she really wants something.

We recently moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn in transition to California here in a few days. Nugget has thus come into contact with her first mouse. The original mouse got caught on a sticky trap and it was a toy. But when she heard it squeal for the first time, the animal lost her mind trying to grab it and the sticky trap out of my dad’s hands.

She now sits, day and night, for the last 10 days, staring at the bottom of the oven where it originally came from. Just….waiting, staring, scratching, even falling asleep with her nose under the oven keeping watch. For 10 days.

Here is my quick thought. Take a look at this psalm.

Psalm 27:13-14

13I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. 14Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.

The word wait here in the Hebrew is not how we would normally define waiting. It’s not like sitting in a doctors office or the DMV just waiting for your number to be called. There is TENSION in this kind of waiting. It’s a waiting in faith. Think of a bow string pulled back or an army waiting in ambush.

When we wait in this way on the Lord. We wait expecting God to do something miraculous and to immediately partner with Him in the miracle.

How many of us have the same tenacity as Nugget? Waiting for even 10 days for God to do something? She wants that mouse to come out, and she is ready all her waking hours to catch it. Imagine, waiting for God, then walking away at the critical point of God’s violent entrance into your circumstances. Just because you didn’t “feel like it”.

I encourage you today. BE STRONG, TAKE COURAGE, and WAIT. For his healing, his provision, his justice, his power to transform your circumstance. But remember, your waiting is and ACTIVELY TENSE waiting. Not checking insta to wait for a number to be called. Be prepared for the step, or leap of faith as soon as you feel the wind change.

What specifically are you waiting for?
