I am in one of those seasons where it sounds like God is on repeat. Every Bible verse, every conversation, every sermon keeps reiterating the same thing.

Motives of the Heart

For the last three months, God has been speaking to me about heart motivation, what success looks like, and Pride vs. Humility. I’ve been sharing these ideas with some of the girls I disciple and it has been life changing.

While reading my Bible and processing with Parker I came to a certain revelation. When we finally stand before God – everything that we did out of the wrong motive will be consumed by fire even if they are “good” things. The reason WHY we do thing’s is possibly MORE important than what we actually do.

“10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.” – 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

This isn’t a debate on whether a Christian is going to heaven or not. This is something so much bigger. What we do on earth and why we do it really matters to Jesus.

So how do we do work of quality?

Again, it comes down to the heart motivation.

“12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:12-13

We often quote this verse on Pinterest images and coffee mugs – but this is a BIG clue to the Kingdom and much more than an inspirational quote. The thing’s that remain are built on the foundation of Jesus and come from a heart full of faith, hope and love.

According to Matthew 7 – It doesn’t matter if I perform miracles in Jesus name if Jesus doesn’t know me. Our motivation matters. Are we trying to build a name for ourselves or are we choosing daily to say “Not my will, but yours be done.”
